Sustainable Leather Materials Answering the Most Asked Questions
This Earth Month what you carry matters
In a world shaped by overproduction and waste the materials we choose matter. Many people want to understand what makes leather sustainable and how to choose better quality products. In this blog we answer the three most asked questions about leather and what it means to create more responsible leather goods.
1. What is deadstock leather and is it sustainable?
Deadstock leather is high quality leather that is left over from larger factories. It is usually unused because of overproduction cancelled orders or changing demand. Instead of being used it is often thrown away or burned.
Using surplus/deadstock leather is one of the most sustainable ways to make leather goods because it gives new life to existing materials. It reduces waste and lowers the need to produce more raw materials.
At Deux Mains, we use surplus leather to create high-quality, handcrafted products made in our solar-powered factory in Haiti. Each piece is designed to be durable, and made to last.

2. What is full grain leather and why is it better?
Full grain leather is the highest quality leather available. It comes from the top layer of the hide and keeps its natural surface which makes it strong and durable.
Over time full grain leather becomes more beautiful as it develops a natural patina. It lasts much longer than lower quality leather and is made to be used for years.
We use full grain and genuine leather because we believe in creating products that are made to last.

3. Is leather sustainable?
Leather can be sustainable or unsustainable depending on how it is made and sourced. Mass produced leather that is not carefully managed can create waste and environmental impact.
However leather becomes more sustainable when it is responsibly sourced when waste is reduced and when products are made to last a long time.
At Deux Mains we focus on sustainability through deadstock leather, responsible sourcing and timeless woven design so our products stay in use for years instead of being replaced often.
A better way to make leather goods
Sustainability is not only about materials it is also about longevity and care. We believe in creating leather goods that are thoughtfully made and designed to last through seasons and years.
